Thing 8

Obviously, I'm skipping around a little bit as I go through the packet.

Youtube has so much to offer that I don't even realize. It really struck me again as I watched the Carol Burnett clips. I laughed out loud watching them and was pleased to see so many of them located in one place.

During an evening this winter with my daughter and son-in-law at their home, I was amazed at how much they use youtube for entertainment. Their computer is hooked up to their big flat-screen and we watched different clips all night. They were showing me their favorites, all built around comedy. It was a hoot!

Until that evening, I didn't realize how easy it is to select your own programming to watch on a big screen. It was a real eye opener for me.

FlickR

Silly me! One of my daughters turned me on to the FlickR website about three years ago. She sent me a ton of vacation pictures (joint vacation in Europe) so I would have them. She and her husband take lots of pictures...once in a while I pose for one. Our emphasis on that aspect of memorabilia couldn't be more different.

Anyway, what I didn't realize was one of the most obvious advantages of using the internet--safe storage of your pictures. I readily saw the advantage of sharing pictures, but sort of assumed my pictures were safe on my computer hard drive. In truth, I never really thought much about a fire or a crashed hard drive. This was probably the result from the lack of emphasis on picture-taking in the first place. I'll share a little story.

My mother died in 2000. I have six siblings and a few months later we met to go through a box (a little smaller than a box for duplicating paper) of pictures. That box contained everything from her 85 years of life and raising seven kids and 23 grandkids. A little box, about half-full.

Anyway, it didn't take us long to divide up the pictures and we even made duplicates for a handful of them. However, it points up the obvious lack of picture-taking as I was growing up.

Thinking about the advantage of using the web would at least preserve the memories and allow shared viewing at the same time. This is obvious to many, but a new learning for me.

Why the Title?

I feel that even though I'm advancing in age (rapidly at times), I've tried to stay pretty current with new technology. I have used a blog for about three years now and feels it's a better tool for communication, yet still has its limits for two-way communication unless you're a great writer or select great topics.

Having said that, however, I'm always "looking to improve".
